Areas Protected

FTA has adopted a “survivability onion” approach to designing fire suppression solutions for the vehicles it is asked to protect. An overall vehicle “survivability onion” suggests that you should avoid being detected, avoid being acquired, avoid being hit, avoid being penetrated, and lastly avoid being killed. The “survivability onion” can be furthered peeled apart to address the various fire protection solutions that would fall into the “don’t be killed” layer of the onion.

The first goal within this layer should be to prevent a fire from occurring after sustaining damage, next should be to eliminate any external fires that would remain and could affect a safe egress or extraction from the vehicle, and lastly should be protecting the crew from any penetrations that would cause fires within the crew compartment.
